Do You Know How to Adjust Your Sails for Smooth Sailing?

Recently I had the great pleasure of spending the day sailing on Lake Michigan. Water feeds my soul and in particular sailing. I used to race for over 10 years and have volunteered for the last several years  at the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing program. This day was special because I was getting the chance to bring together my LOVE for sailing with the LOVE of some of my favorite people, two of which I know from Judd Goldman. My other three friends were inexperienced and one had never sailed before, but I was confident he would LOVE it too. And truly my favorite sailing is at night – stars and the sound of the water hitting the hull is, well I can’t think of a better sound to relax and fall in LOVE deeper with life than that.

The trip had been planned for a few weeks. We were all excited, along with being a bit nervous on our schedules remaining open and would the weather cooperate. We set sail from Jackson Park Harbor  to pick up our last friend at Burnham Harbor. It was also the Chicago Air & Water Show which meant heavy boat traffic.

The day turned out magical and it wasn’t until the next day that I realized our day on the lake was a perfect example of life, or at least how we can view life. The afternoon which went into evening, which went into night, which went into the wee hours of the morning was filled with gorgeous weather, a nice breeze, great conversations, lots of laughter, yummy food and beverage and the beautiful backdrop of Chicago to ooh and aah at. It also had the air show in the afternoon and fireworks at night. Along with the spectacular memories created that day, it also had moments of challenges. There were dark storm clouds lurking, the wind died for awhile, the heavier boat traffic required more attention to our surroundings and a couple of the new sailors experienced a little queasiness. We each had the opportunity to focus on what wasn’t going as planned or we could all focus on adjusting our sails as needed and having as much fun as possible. The storm blew past us and we didn’t feel a drop. When the winds died, many of us went swimming until the winds picked up, and our new sailors quickly turned it around to be able to enjoy the day full out.

So, as you go through your day, remember you get to choose what to focus on. You can continue to try and go the way you wanted to go and fight the obstacles in front of you. Or you can choose to see the obstacles as an opportunity to grow and adjust your sails to a new course that very well might get you to where you want to go happier than you thought possible.

Moving forward, I invite you to smoothly sail through life by:

Knowing you are on the right course for you. Regardless if the goal seems impossible, hold on to knowing you can accomplish anything by adjusting your course as needed.

Appreciating your current course by knowing whether it’s smooth seas or big waves, all experiences are part of your course. See the big waves (contrasting experiences) as simply adjustments towards your end goal of living the highest and happiest version of you.

LOVING your journey by getting excited about where you are, where you’ve been, and where you are going.

Mostly, my wish for you is to adjust your sails to journey through life with a calm breeze at your back leading you to the happiest possible life filled with your biggest dreams.

Until next time, who wants to go sailing?

I smoothly sail through all experiences with infinite LOVE and gratitude.
